Community Nursing charity, The Queen’s Institute of Community Nursing (QICN), has announced its 2026–2030 Strategic Plan, which will guide the charity over the next five years and strengthen its role as the leading global voice for community nursing excellence, support and information.

As the healthcare landscape in England undergoes a shift toward neighbourhood-based care models, and similar models and ambitions in the devolved nations, the QICN’s new strategy aligns directly with the “three shifts” of the national England 10-year health plan, and similar strategic directions in the other nations: moving from hospital to community, analogue to digital, and sickness to prevention.

The 2026-2030 strategy reinforces the QICN’s role as an independent advocate for the nursing workforce. With a mission dedicated to promoting excellent nursing care for everyone, wherever they need it, the Institute aims to expand its strategic reach and ensure that community nurses are at the heart of health and care policy.

The QICN will be the organisation called upon to shape national policy. Community nursing is changing rapidly. By empowering nurses to raise their voices and by providing independent, data-driven intelligence, we will ensure the unique contribution of the community nursing team is recognised at every level.

Steph Lawrence MBE, QICN Chief Executive

Our new strategy represents the next stage in the evolution of the Institute as we seek to both support community nurses and set out how community health services can provide world leading Universal Health Coverage for the people they serve.

Strategic Priorities for 2026-2030

The QICN has identified six core priorities to drive the charity forward:

  1. Policy Influence: Engaging with the DHSC, NHSE, the devolved government departments and leading think-tanks to shape the developing neighbourhood health model.
  2. Data and Evidence: Growing research partnerships to provide the essential intelligence needed to support national debates on primary and community care.
  3. Innovation and Quality Improvement: Testing and evaluating new approaches to care to inform policy and practice.
  4. Leadership Development: Empowering a diverse community of Queen’s Nurses and Fellows through political influencing work and an All-Party Political Group for nursing in England.
  5. Wellbeing and Support: Maintaining a dedicated focus on the personal and professional needs of all community nurses.
  6. Financial Sustainability: Ensuring long-term impact through a flexible approach to fundraising, income generation, organisational membership and the delivery of bespoke educational programmes.

At the heart of the 2026-2030 strategy are the QICN’s core values: Excellence, Inclusivity, Partnership, Independence, Advocacy, Legacy, and Integrity. By cherishing its history while championing new ways of working, the QICN is committed to challenging inequity and making a tangible difference to the lives of individuals, carers, and families.
