Module 3 - Identifying and Supporting Young Carers

The Carers Trust Network partners provide a range of direct services for carers including young carers. The link below will allow a young carer or School Nurse to search for services in their area using their postcode.

School Nurses can identify and support 'Young Carer Projects' to gain access to professionals who may be able to organise respite care and to support families to make sustainable changes. Your local Children’s Services Department should be able to tell you more about this.

Young carers' projects have a wealth of expertise about young carers’ issues and local needs. Projects and direct support services for children help reduce both the sense of isolation experienced by many young carers and their families and the stigma that young carers often feel. There may be a young carers' project in your locality.

Sometimes it is appropriate to advise the young carer to take a break from the responsibilities of being a caregiver. It can help them feel refreshed and better able to cope, whether they physically leave home or not. The length of the break depends on how comfortable they feel being away.
