Coaching is not teaching, the aim is to help the carer to learn actively. A Coach should act like a mirror – enabling them to see how they are performing a particular task, by asking questions that help them reflect, replay and revisit a particular experience.
Navigate the carer through the learning process – by dividing the task into manageable chunks, planning the overall outcome and helping them organise the specific stages. The carer will then improve their performance by building on their strengths and working on their weaknesses. The coach can support progression by praising their success and asking questions that help them to identify and consider what might be done differently.
If a Community Nurse can achieve this, the benefits to them will be that it; builds positive relationships, improves communication, shares experiences and enables them to learn from others.
