However, some carers may be prone to depression, grief, fatigue and changes in social relationships. They may also experience physical health problems and fatigue. Screening tools to help identify this are discussed further in
Module 5 – Carers Needs Assessment.
Carers who perceive more benefits from caregiving report lower levels of depression (Haley et al., 2003). This sense of satisfaction and wellbeing can have important benefits for carers well after caregiving has ended.
• A sense of giving back to someone who has cared for them.
• The satisfaction of knowing that their loved one is getting excellent care.
• Personal growth and increased meaning and purpose in ones' life.
• Feeling important; some carers feel that they are passing on a tradition of care and leading by example.
• A positive form of coping with stressful circumstances and situation.
