Nicola Milne QN and Teffy Thomas are co-editors of the recently published Oxford Handbook of Diabetes Nursing (second edition).

Here they describe the key features of the new edition and their journey to publication.

We were privileged to be offered the opportunity to update The Oxford Handbook of Diabetes just over two years ago. The original edition, with DSN Lorraine Avery as the lead author, had been a popular and effective companion to many DSNs. However, published in 2014 there was a compelling need for the content of the book be updated. Lorraine kindly handed the baton to us and so began our journey.

On review of the first edition, it was very encouraging to note just how many positive changes there had been in diabetes care since 2014, but also how much of the fundamentals of best practice care had remained.

For this second edition, we have included new chapters dedicated to technology, psychology, insulin and peri operative care. Existing chapters have been expanded – for example in the chapter for type 2 diabetes there is inclusion of remission, the latest glucose lowering therapies and contemporary lifestyle guidance. The new edition also sees the expansion of inpatient diabetes guidance within all chapters, thus making the book truly valuable for healthcare professionals across all care settings.

We are delighted that some of the chapters have been authored by renowned colleagues who have generously given their time and expertise. These include specialist nurses from Manchester Royal Infirmary (Alyson Chapman, Jiney Edwards, Kelly Hayes and Jayne Hince), fellow Diabetes UK Clinical Champions Dr Rose Stewart and DSN Sarah Gregory, fellow Primary Care Diabetes and Obesity Society Committee members Jane Diggle and Su Down, dietician Madeline Little and chair elect of the Primary Care and Cardiology Society, Beverley Bostock who is also a QN.

Although the title gives a nod to diabetes ‘nursing’, the book is applicable for all healthcare professionals and indeed the full diabetes MDT of nurses, doctors, pharmacists, phycologists, podiatrists, dieticians and AHPs. We hope that this second edition becomes an invaluable companion to those starting out in their diabetes career, or those wanting to refresh their knowledge.

The book is published online by Oxford University Press and is available to pre-order from all good book stockists.

Nicola Milne is a Queen’s Nurse, Primary Care Diabetes Specialist Nurse (DSN), Co-Vice Chair of the Primary Care Diabetes and Obesity Society and Diabetes UK Clinical Champion.

Teffy Thomas is an Advanced Clinical Practitioner in Diabetes and Clinic Lead for Inpatient Diabetes Team at Manchester Royal Infirmary.
